Carbon Monoxide (CO) Smoke Alarm Placement

Colorado Law requires Carbon Monoxide monitors in all new construction and homes for sale.  The placement of monitors must be within 15 feet of any bedroom.  My recommendation is to replace the existing smoke alarms with CO/Smoke Alarms and simply follow the standard rules for Smoke Alarm Placement as found in NFPA 72.

1.  Detectors must be hardwired with battery backup or battery operated when upgrading without modification.  However, it is not permitted to have hardwired only detectors.

2.  Detectors must be at least 4 inches to 12 inches from the ceiling when being hung on a sidewall.  They must be at least 4 inches from any sidewall when hung from the ceiling.

3.  Detectors must be placed in every bedroom and connecting rooms like a hallway or family room.

4.  At least one detector must be placed in an unfinished basement.
Fire departments and local building departments have more information on this issue.  The primary reference document for smoke alarms is NFPA 72 and the IRC, section 313.
