Radon Testing
The first step in determining the need for mitigation is testing. Why test? According to the US EPA, Radon is the second highest (22,000 per year) cause of death (lung cancer) in non-smokers. If you live in Colorado (see map) there is an outstanding chance you have high levels (4.0 pico-Curies per Liter or more) of radon in your residence. YOU MUST TEST in order to know if mitigation is needed. In order to test, you must follow certain guidelines (NEHA) in order to ensure a valid test was performed. If the test is valid and you get a reading of 4.0 pico-Curies per liter or above, mitigation may be warranted.
The test is conducted over a 48 hour to seven day period. A written report is provided or is part of the home inspection. I use a real time radon monitor to conduct the test and results are available in near real time. The cost of the test is $100. The fee is waivered when the client wishes to contract our radon mitigation services.
